Herb Highlights: Chamomile
Introduction
Different genus, same name?
Both Matricaria chamomilla and Chamaemelum nobile are used in teas. However, Matricaria chamomilla, commonly known as German chamomile, is a cultivar from Germany.2 It is also called blue chamomile due to the blue color of its flower’s essential oil.1 It is Matricaria chamomilla that has been used and studied for its effects on human health and wellness, whereas Chamaemelum nobile is more often used for topical applications.3 Chamaemelum nobile, on the other hand, is called Roman or English chamomile and the essential oil is clear.3 Despite these differences, the two have been called “true” chamomile due to the similarities in their uses and appearance.2
Power Punch
One of the reasons why Chamomile has been used for thousands of years is the fact that it is generally safe and effective. However, there are interactions with drugs like sedatives4 and specifically warfarin, the blood thinner,5 that those of us who love a nice calming cup of chamomile tea should know about. So, as always, please speak to your trusted health care provider before enjoying!
